The Meaning of Taharah and Its Importance
Attaining Taharah (ritual purity) is an essential condition for Salah. The fundamental meaning and concept of Taharah is to attain purity.
Salah cannot be accepted without Taharah; therefore, it is vital for every Muslim to understand its basic principles and types.
What Are the Types of Taharah?
There are fundamentally Two Types of Taharah (ritual purity) that are essential to observe for Salah:
1. Taharah Ma’nawiyyah (Ritual Purification)
This is the purity that relates to specific rulings of the Shariah. The meaning of this Taharah is that a person must be ritually pure according to Islamic law. Its rulings include the following:
- Performing Ghusl (ritual bath): When Ghusl becomes obligatory (Fard).
- Performing Wudu (ablution): Being in a state of Wudu for Salah.
- Performing Tayammum (dry ablution): Performing Tayammum in cases where water is unavailable or there is no ability to use water.
All rulings regarding Ghusl, Wudu, and Tayammum are counted under this Taharah Ma’nawiyyah.
2. Taharah Hissiyyah (Physical / Tangible Purification)
This is the purification from impurities that are outwardly perceptible. It means that a person must be pure from all types of apparent filth and impurity.
In this, the purity of the following three things is necessary:
- Purity of the body: There should be no impurity or impure substance on the outward parts of the human body.
- Purity of the clothes: The clothes worn while offering Salah must be pure from all kinds of filth.
- Purity of the place: The place where a person intends to offer Salah must also be free from any impurity.
Why Are Two Types of Taharah Essential for Salah?
Both types of Taharah (ritual purity) are necessary for the acceptance and validity of Salah.
That is, a person being in a state of Wudu (ablution) or Ghusl (ritual bath), which is Taharah Ma’nawiyyah, is essential, and the purity of their body, clothes, and place from apparent impurity, which is Taharah Hissiyyah, is equally essential.
If even one of these two conditions is not fulfilled, the Taharah remains incomplete.
