What Is the Supplication After Wudu and What Is Its Reward?
After completing Wudu, there is a specific supplication to be read. Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said:
Hadith:
- Whoever performs Wudu and performs it well, then reads the following
words: “I bear witness that there is no god worthy of worship
except Allah alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His
servant and Messenger.
O Allah, make me among those who constantly repent, and make me among those who purify themselves” for such a person, all eight gates of Paradise will be opened
and he may enter through whichever he wishes. - (Jami` at-Tirmidhi: 55)
The words of this supplication are:
- “Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan ‘abduhu wa rasuluh.
Allahumma aj’alni minat-tawwabina waj’alni minal-mutatahhirin.
Whoever reads these words after completing Wudu, all eight gates of Paradise
will be opened for them, and they may enter through whichever they wish.
This is the established supplication after Wudu.
What Is the Second Supplication After Wudu?
A second supplication after Wudu has also been established, as narrated by Imam al-Nasa’i. Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (RA) narrates from the Messenger of Allah (PBUH)
that whoever performs Wudu and then reads:
Hadith:
- “Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise be to You. I bear witness that there is no
god worthy of worship except You.
I seek Your forgiveness and I turn to You in repentance” these words will be written
on a scroll, which will be sealed and preserved until the Day of Judgement. - (Sunan al-Nasa’i)
The words of this supplication are:
- “Subhanakallahumma wa bihamdik, ash-hadu an la ilaha illa ant, astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk.”
Whoever reads this supplication after Wudu, these words will be recorded, placed under a seal, and preserved safely until the Day of Judgement.
Both of these supplications after Wudu are established from the Prophet (PBUH).
Is Pointing the Finger Toward the Sky After Wudu Sunnah?
Regarding the manner of reading these supplications, it is important
to understand the following:
- The supplications themselves are established from the Prophet (PBUH).
- However, there is no established method in which a person should:
- Face the Qibla while reading these supplications, or
- Point the index finger toward the sky while reading: “Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah.”
Pointing the finger toward the sky while reading the supplication
after Wudu is not found in any Hadith of the Prophet (PBUH).
This practice has become widely known among people, and it has been passed from one person to another that after performing Wudu, one points the finger upward
toward the sky and reads: “Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah.”
To be clear:
- Reading the supplication after Wudu is established from the Prophet (PBUH).
- However, pointing the finger toward the sky while doing so, or facing the Qibla for it, is not mentioned anywhere in the narrations from the Prophet (PBUH).
