How to Make the Intention and What Dua to Say Before Wudu?

Why Is Intention (Niyyah) Essential in Wudu?

The first and most important thing to understand about Wudu is that intention (Niyyah)
is a necessary condition. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

• Innama al-a’malu binniyyat (Bukhari: 01)

This means: all actions are judged by their intentions.

If a person were to stand in a place where every part of their body
became wet, yet they had no intention or purpose in mind, their Wudu would not be valid.

The meaning of this statement of the Prophet (ﷺ) is that intention is a condition
for every act of worship. Without it, the act itself has no valid existence.

Does the Intention Need to Be Spoken Aloud?

Intention is the resolve of the heart. No words need to be uttered with the tongue.

It is sufficient to simply decide in one’s heart:
I am performing Wudu in order to pray, so that I may attain purity
and be able to offer Salah.
This internal resolve is what constitutes Niyyah. There are no specific words required for it.

What Is the Sunnah Supplication Before Beginning Wudu?

Once the intention has been made and Wudu is about to begin, the only supplication to read before starting is “Bismillah.” Nothing more is to be added to it.

Two Hadiths establish this:

• “La salata liman la wudua lahu, wa la wudua liman lam yadhkur isma Allahi ta’ala alayhi” (Sunan Abi Dawud: 101)

Abu Hurairah (RA) narrates that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: there is no Salah for the one who has no Wudu, and there is no Wudu for the one who did not mention the name of Allah over it.

• “Tawadda’u bismillah” (Sunan an-Nasa’i: 78)

Anas (RA) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: begin your Wudu with Bismillah.

Therefore, before beginning Wudu, “Bismillah” alone is to be read.
This is obligatory, and nothing is to be added to it.

Are Supplications for Each Limb During Wudu Authentically Established?

What Is the Correct Position on This Matter?

Attempting to classify every act within Wudu as Sunnah, Nafl, or Fard can become unnecessarily complicated.

Where the Prophet (ﷺ) himself did not draw such distinctions, it is sufficient for a Muslim to understand that something is the command of the Prophet (ﷺ) and act accordingly.

Are There Any Supplications for Individual Limbs?

No such supplications are established from the Prophet (ﷺ).
Some people mention specific du’as to be read when washing the hands, the face, and other limbs during Wudu.
None of these are proven from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).

The Sunnah method is as follows: “Bismillah” is read at the very beginning, and the supplication after completing Wudu is read at the very end.

During the Wudu itself, while washing each limb, no supplication is to be read.
