What Is the Islamic Merit of Using the Miswak?

The Prophet (ﷺ) informed us of certain acts that are best performed
before or alongside Wudu.

Chief among these is using the Miswak. While it can be done after Wudu as well, performing it alongside Wudu is the better and more virtuous approach.

Abu Hurairah (RA) narrates that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“Law la an ashuqqa ‘ala ummati la amartuhum bis-siwaki ‘inda kulli salah”
(Sahih al-Bukhari: 887)

This means: if I did not fear that it would be a hardship for my Ummah,
I would have commanded them to use the Miswak before every Salah

This makes it clear that using the Miswak is a highly significant act, one which the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) emphasised greatly.

When Is the Sunnah Time to Use the Miswak?

The Miswak does not have one single fixed time. It may be used at several points:

  • Before prayer: Using the Miswak “alongside prayer” means using it
    before the prayer begins.
  • Before or during Wudu: The Miswak may be used before beginning Wudu,
or it may be used alongside the rinsing of the mouth during Wudu.
  • Between Wudu and the congregation: It may also be used at any point
during the time between completing Wudu and joining the congregational prayer.

Is There a Specific Length or Method for Holding the Miswak?

Regarding the length, it is commonly said that the Miswak should be approximately the length of a handspan.

However, no clear and specific proof for this measurement is established from the Prophet (ﷺ). The essential requirement is simply that the Miswak be suitable for cleaning
the mouth.

Regarding how to hold it, no specific method of holding the Miswak is established as binding from the Shariah.
It may be held in any manner, used in any size, and any type of suitable stick may be used.

Can a Toothbrush Replace the Miswak for Wudu?

Scholars hold differing opinions regarding the modern toothbrush.

The predominant view is that if a person cleans his mouth with a toothbrush with every Wudu, it is hoped that Allah (SWT) will grant him the same reward.

However, what is superior and preferable is to use what is specifically known as the Miswak.
