Is Salah Valid Without Surah al-Fatihah?
In Salah, once a person has made the intention, stood upright, entered the prayer by saying Allahu Akbar, recited the Du’a al-Istiftah, and said the Ta’awwudh and Bismillah, the next step is to recite Surah al-Fatihah.
Ubadah ibn al-Samit (RA) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said:
“لَا صَلَاةَ لِمَنْ لَمْ يَقْرَأْ بِفَاتِحَةِ الْكِتَابِ”
There is no Salah for the one who does not recite Surah al-Fatihah.
(Sahih al-Bukhari: 756; Sahih Muslim: 394a)
The wording of this Hadith follows the same emphatic structure as the Kalimah “La ilaha illallah” (there is no god but Allah).
In the same way, the words here are “La salata liman lam yaqra’ bi-fatihatil-kitab”
(There is no Salah for the one who does not recite Surah al-Fatihah).
Does This Ruling Apply to All Types of Prayers?
In this Hadith, the Prophet (PBUH) made no distinction whatsoever:
- Whether the person is praying alone or behind an Imam.
- Whether the prayer is Nafl (voluntary) or Fard (obligatory).
Both the word “prayer” and the word “person” in this Hadith are general and unrestricted.
No prayer of any kind is valid without Surah al-Fatihah.
The principle and ruling given by the Prophet (PBUH) applies to every situation.
Whether a person is praying alone or behind an Imam, Surah al-Fatihah must be recited
in both cases.
Whether one is praying a Nafl or a Fard prayer, any Rak’ah in which Surah al-Fatihah is not recited will not be counted.
This Hadith has been narrated and recorded by all the scholars of Hadith in their collections.
What Is the Hadith About Reciting Behind the Imam?
Ubadah ibn al-Samit (RA) narrates in another report, recorded by Imam Abu Dawud:
We were praying the Fajr prayer behind the Prophet (PBUH), and the recitation became somewhat difficult for him.
After completing the prayer, he asked: “Perhaps you were reciting behind me?”
The Companions replied: “Yes, O Messenger of Allah, we were reciting behind you.
” He then said: “Do not recite anything behind me except Surah al-Fatihah, for there
is no Salah without it.”
This authentic narration is from a Fajr prayer, which is a Jahri (loud recitation) prayer.
Whether praying behind the Imam in Fajr or praying alone, according to these Hadiths of the Prophet (PBUH), reciting Surah al-Fatihah is binding and essential. Without it, the prayer is
not valid.
How Should a Person Recite Surah al-Fatihah Behind the Imam?
If a person is praying behind the Imam, they are permitted to recite Surah al-Fatihah in different ways:
- Along with the Imam: If a person recites Surah al-Fatihah simultaneously with the Imam, it is permissible.
- During the pauses: If the Imam pauses between the verses of Surah al-Fatihah, the person behind may recite during those gaps, and this is also permissible.
- After the Imam finishes: It is also permissible for the person to complete their
Surah al-Fatihah after the Imam has finished his, either during the brief pause
before the next Surah or shortly after.
However they manage to recite it, the person praying behind the Imam must recite
Surah al-Fatihah in every situation.
Can a Person Recite Another Surah Behind a Loud Imam?
Reciting any Surah after Surah al-Fatihah while behind the Imam is not permitted when the Imam is reciting aloud. In a Jahri (loud) prayer, the person behind the Imam should recite only Surah al-Fatihah and then remain silent.
However, when praying alone, or when behind an Imam in a Sirri (silent) prayer, the person should recite Surah al-Fatihah and then also recite whatever additional Surah is easy for them. This is better for them.
Does Reciting Surah al-Fatihah Contradict the Quranic Command to Listen Silently?
In light of all these Hadiths, it is established that Salah is not valid without Surah al-Fatihah. There is no authentic and explicit evidence that prohibits the recitation
of Surah al-Fatihah behind the Imam.
The Quranic verse states:
“وَإِذَا قُرِئَ الْقُرْآنُ فَاسْتَمِعُوا لَهُ وَأَنصِتُوا لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ”
When the Quran is being recited, listen to it and remain silent, so that you may be shown mercy.
(Surah al-A’raf 7:204)
The command to listen silently in this verse refers to the recitation that comes after
Surah al-Fatihah, because the permission and command to recite Surah al-Fatihah
was given by the Prophet (PBUH) himself.
There can never be any contradiction or conflict between the command of Allah and the command of His Prophet (PBUH).
Therefore, when praying behind the Imam, Surah al-Fatihah must be recited. After that, when the Imam is reciting aloud, one must listen in silence.
May Allah grant us all the understanding and ability to act upon these rulings.
